The Who - 60th Anniversary Special
I’m thrilled to unveil my latest artwork which pays tribute to the legendary rock group The Who. This piece was commissioned by Modfather Clothing as part of the launch event for their new range of clobber to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of these Rock n Roll legends.
This pop art collage is a vibrant celebration of their iconic music and mod roots, capturing the essence of a band that not only defined a sound but also an entire British subculture. With bold colours and dynamic graphic elements, inspired by The Who's most famous collaborator Peter Blake, each layer of the piece reflects the raucous energy that The Who brought to the stage.
But The Who were more than just musicians, they became the embodiment of the mod lifestyle as it metamorphosised from the desaturated world of back street jazz cafes to the vibrant technicolour pop art scene. Led by Pete Meaden, and followed by an army of young sharp suited, scooter riding kids who bought into their rebellious spirit and raw energy at venues such as TheMarquee Club.
My artwork tries to channel the essence of that pop art vibrancy and energy, featuring references to Pete, Roger, Keith and John in their early days in the 1960s and the electric atmosphere of the scenes they inspired.
Although this is definitely not an 'Auto Destructive Art' piece, where Pete famously smashed instruments on stage, creating a powerful visual and sonic spectacle.
I hope this piece resonates with Who fans.
